A Different Kind of Clinical Supervision: Use of Early Recollections for Establishing a Strength-Based Process in Clinical Supervision

This workshop will be a combination of lecture, interactive involvement of participants, and exercises for employing the concepts of the lecture. Participants will be educated on Adlerian principles, Adlerian models of supervision, and early recollections and strength-based work with supervisees with a live demonstration by the presenter and a volunteer.
Participants will:
1) Understand the importance of working from a strength-based theoretical foundation using Adlerian Theory and early recollections for providing clinical supervision to promote supervisees’ understandings of self and clients.
2) Develop skills – through interactive dyad and triad work - for employing a strength-based foundation using Adlerian Theory and early recollections for providing clinical supervision.

Introduction to Adlerian Theory and Methods

Many contemporary theorists have developed their ideas from first examining Adler’s theory and others have incorporated Adlerian principles without knowing it. This workshop will succinctly overview the central tenets of Adlerian theory and methods, which will be useful for anyone new to Adlerian theory or who needs a refresher.
Objectives:
1) Provide a foundation of Adlerian theory for all participants who will be attending further sessions in the GSAP Conference.
2) Provide an overview of the Adlerian tenets as well as methods for promoting therapeutic change in sessions.

Adlerian Influence: Increasing the Odds

We will discuss the importance of influencing clients to promote positive change. We will explore changes of thought, attitude, and luck.
Participants will:
1) Discuss the importance of influence in therapy.
2) Learn how to promote client change.

Breaking Individualism: Adlerian Concepts in Premarital Counseling

Adler believed that people struggled to find happiness in relationships and marriage due to false perspectives of what marriage entailed. This presentation will assist with applying Adlerian concepts to premarital counseling in order to increase positive and healthy expectations of marriage.
Objectives:
1) Help Adlerian counselors apply Adlerian techniques and interventions to premarital counseling.
2) Assist Adlerian counselors in utilizing Adlerian techniques to break individualized expectations of marriage in couples.

Working with Clients Experiencing Grief or Depression

Sadness and loss plague the human soul and most individuals have endured such emotional challenges at least once in their lives. This workshop will examine the differences between grief and depression and will examine what treatment for each of these would look like from the Adlerian perspective.
Objectives:
1) Examine the differences between clients struggling with grief versus those who are depressed.
2) Explore the Adlerian goals and approach to working with clients either struggling with grief or with depression.

Adlerian Counseling Skills Lab

The practice of counseling often takes place behind closed doors with little real-time feedback. This can lead to a dulling of skill and intentionality of practice. We will work to hone the basic skills of Adlerian therapy, while adding in challenges of more advanced skills and techniques.
Objectives:
1) Review of counseling skills and Adlerian techniques.
2) Practice basic, intermediate and Adlerian skills, with intentionality, and creativeness.

Care Partner Counseling and Support Interventions

There are millions of care partners in the U.S. seeking counseling. This workshop will introduce the types of caregiving personalities and the changing relationship dynamics between care partners and loved ones; conflicting emotions in caregiving; and various types of care partner counseling such as individual, couples, family, and group.
Objectives:
1) Understand the changes in relationship dynamics in caregiving and learn how the challenges of caregiving can impact a client’s overall health and well-being.
2) Explore the various approaches to care partner counseling such as individual, couples, family, and group.
FRIDAY NIGHT HIGHLIGHT SESSION
6-9:15pm (3 Clock Hours)
Adlerian Perspective on Working with the LGBTGEQ+ Community
Susan Belangee, PhD, LPC, NCC, ACS
Many people are unsure about best practices for working with LGBTGEQ+ individuals. This workshop presents Adlerian theory as a useful way of understanding the ALGBTIC competencies. Attendees will leave with a better understanding of how to be affirming in practice.
Participants will:
1) Be able to explain how aspects of Adlerian theory align with the ALGBTIC competencies for working with LGBTGEQ+ clients and supervisees.
2) Evaluate current assessment tools and co-create LGBTGEQ+ affirming versions in order to synthesize the information presented.
DOORS to each presentation will be closed 15 minutes after the start of the session.
No one will be allowed to enter the session after this time.
Continuing Education credit will not be provided to those missing more than15 minutes of the session attended.
