This workshop will focus on educating clinicians and educators on the use of the TABER method and application of early recollections to establish a strong therapeutic relationship with clients. The workshop will include interactive discussion, a live demonstration, and a question and answer section for participants to gain a better understanding of the TABER method.

1) Discuss the application of early recollections for establishing a strong and trusting therapeutic relationship.
2) Discuss the application of early recollections when considering their use for different theoretical orientations but specifically within an Adlerian theoretical perspective.

Clinicians often avoid addressing sexual topics with clients, usually to avoid discomfort, however most clients feel relief upon learning they can process difficulties in a supportive environment. This workshop aims to increase clinicians' abilities to help clients tackle the Life Task of Love/Intimacy pertaining to sexual health.
Partcipants will:
1) Discuss Adler's concept of the Life Task of Love/Intimacy and how this impacts relationships.
2) Gain knowledge around sexual intimacy to increase comfort level in addressing issues with clients in therapy.
3) Demonstrate therapeutic strategies to aid in helping clients process their Love/Intimacy struggles.

The Acceptance and Commitment Prosocial Matrix from an Adlerian Perspective will be presented as a tool to assist clients and various groups to aid them to move forward toward their valued goals. Participants will experience using the matrix for both their personal growth and the growth of their clients, incorporating Adlerian concepts such as social interest and movement.

What is Up with This Kid? Conceptualizing a Client Using Adlerian Concepts

This workshop will combine lecture and demonstration on Adlerian Therapy and Adlerian Play Therapy phases of therapy and the concepts of the goals of misbehavior, crucial c’s, and personality priorities. Participants will then practice conceptualizing a client using the goals of misbehavior, crucial c’s, and personality priorities.
Participants will:
1) Discuss the goals of misbehavior within Adlerian Play Therapy perspective.
2) Practice skills using the goals of misbehavior to guide clients to reorient their lifestyle.
3) Discuss the crucial c’s within Adlerian Play Therapy perspective in order to increase the clinician’s ability to conceptualize clients and assist the client in gaining insight into their lifestyle.
4) Discuss the personality priorities and practice skills using the personality priorities to assist clients to create movement in therapy.

The Fictional Finalism in Psychotherapy

Adler stated that when we identify fictional finalisms (or self-ideal), the reasons for individuals’ choices and behaviors become clear. This enhances the therapist’s ability to empathize, conceptualize cases, and plan treatment interventions. This workshop will demonstrate lifestyle investigation tactics and use case studies to empower therapists to discover fictional finalisms.
Participants will:
1) Define fictional finalisms and recognize their importance in the etiology of symptoms.
2) Identify Adlerian methods for assessing the fictional finalisms.
3) Observe demonstrations of lifestyle investigation strategies.
4) Apply tactics used to determine fictional finalisms with other participants.
5) Utilize case studies to analyze psychosocial and lifestyle information to identify fictional finalisms.

1) Explain how early childhood experiences influence an individual’s culture of food and eating.
2) Discuss Adlerian psychology concepts and the links with eating disorders and related food issues.
3) Apply the theoretical concepts to case vignettes.
4) Explain the impact of society on an individual’s culture regarding food usage and consumption.
5) Discuss techniques for assessing severity of symptoms and making ethically sound decisions about appropriate treatment options.

Healing from Trauma using Adlerian Principles

Trauma survivors frequently struggle to lessen their PTSD symptoms and to heal from their experiences. Participants will learn how to utilize Adlerian theoretical concepts and strategies to enhance their work during individual counseling sessions with survivors of trauma. The workshop will be comprised of lecture, discussion, and demonstrations of therapeutic strategies.
Objectives:
1) Review DSM diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, the impact of trauma on clients’ well-being, and the importance of balancing knowledge of symptoms while avoiding pathologizing a client’s experiences.
2) Discuss the importance of empowerment as the foundation for the therapeutic process and empowerment’s connection to the Adlerian concepts of self-determination and holism.
3) Discuss ways to assist clients to create meaning for their lives and focus on growth from traumatic experiences.
4) Demonstrate therapeutic strategies for aiding in healing from trauma by focusing on client’s goals, strengths, superiority, and choices.

Group Clinical Supervision: A Reflective Process

The use of reflecting teams in the supervision process encourages the engagement of all supervisees in the practice of skills and the promotion of professional growth. Together, we will explore the basic assumptions of reflecting team supervision and its connection with Adlerian theory. Demonstrations and practice will round out the session.

1) Identify the desired attributes of a supervisor.
2) List the stages of group supervision from an Adlerian Perspective.
3) Observe demonstration of the reflective process.

The BASIS-A Inventory helps counselors understand clients’ personality dynamics and purposefulness of behavior. Participants in this workshop will use themselves as guides to learn how to utilize the BASIS-A to treat clients with anxiety issues.
Participants will:
1) Discuss the role that lifestyle plays in developing and maintaining anxiety symptoms.
2) Explain Adler’s concept of lifestyle and how it is formed.
3) Apply the concept of lifestyle to case vignettes.
4) Demonstrate lifestyle assessment techniques for clients with anxiety.
5) Utilize their own BASIS-A scores to practice giving feedback to clients.
6) Calculate BASIS-A raw scores and interpret the scale scores.

Relationships, Boundaries, Emotions, and the Purposefulness of Conflict

Adler identified intimacy as one of the life tasks and indeed it is a task that requires social cooperation. The problem in most relationships is that individuals are bent on pursuing their own private goals without often being aware or mindful of the goals of their partner. These hidden agendas lead to boundary violations and emotional reactivity.
Participants will:
1) Discuss and apply the basic Adlerian tenets of social interest, purposefulness of behaviors, early recollections, and the utilization of lifestyle for solving problems in couples counseling session.
2) Utilize early relationship recollections for revealing hidden expectations that couples form in the ideal stage of the relationship in order to better identify relationship strengths as well as perceived expectations for how the relationship should evolve.
3) Assess the purpose of relational conflict and be able to intervene with clients to help them navigate through issues of boundary violations, unspoken expectations, and difficulties with communication.
4) Apply the metaphor of the “imaginary fence” to help members of a couple relationship recognize and take responsibility for their contributions to the relationship.
5) Share how they intend to use this concept for self-understanding across the tasks of life.

Clinical Supervision: Using Early Recollections to Establish a Strong and Trusting Supervisory Relationship

This workshop will focus on educating potential and actual counseling supervisors on the extensive history and multi-theoretical use of early recollections in counseling and psychotherapy with a specific discussion on use from an Adlerian orientation. The workshop will include interactive discussion, a live demonstration, and triad/dyad participant practice.
Participants will:
1) Discuss the history of early recollection use relevant to theories of psychotherapy and clinical supervision.
2) Discuss the application of early recollections when considering their use for different theoretical orientations but specifically within an Adlerian supervision perspective.
3) Demonstrate the application of early recollections relevant to supervisory and/or therapeutic relationships.
