FEAR, FOG AND FAMILIARITY: OVERCOMING CLIENTS' OBSTACLES TO CHANGE

Change is scary. Change is difficult. Change is something that is often avoided, even when individuals recognize that change is necessary. In this 2-hour virtual presentation, we will examine the biggest obstacles to change, which can often leave therapists frustrated in their well-planned efforts to invoke healthy adjustments in their clients’ lives. We will apply techniques to help clients envision the benefits of making a positive change despite not having prior experiences of success.

Objectives:

1) Conceptualize the Adlerian stages of counseling and identify some of the client’s major obstacles to change

2) Verbalize understanding of the roles of inferiority feelings, private logic and lifestyle plays in motivating people to action

3) Apply Adlerian techniques of encouragement and cultivating social interest as well as the application of metaphors and “acting as if” techniques to help clients overcome obstacles to change
